Explanation- The decision to effect the Partition of Bengal was announced in July 1905 by the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. Though administrative convenience was cited but it was an effort to break down the strong nationalist feelings. The partition took place on 16 October 1905 and separated the largely Muslim eastern areas from the largely Hindu western areas. Two new provinces created were Eastern Bengal and Assam. Statement 2 is correct. As the plan came to be known to the public, there was a great protest by the Hindus and Muslims of Bengal against it. The unity of the Hindus and the Muslims in their protest against the plan of partition made it all the more clear to Curzon that it would be more dangerous to allow the national feeling of the Bengalees to grow further. The people of Bengal thus, reacted to the partition very strongly and considered it disruptive to Hindu Muslim unity and a blow to Bengali literature and Culture. Lord Curzon had to face the outrage of the Bengali people when the moderates and the radicals along with the Muslims made strong joint efforts to stop the partition. This belied the hope of checking the growing nationalist movement. The people got more united because of the anti partition movement and became more involved in the national movement. Partition day was declared as day of mourning. Vande Mataram, the song written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee became national song and encouraged a sense of solidarity. Rabindranath Tagore also asked Hindu and Muslim to tie Rakhis in each other’s hand to show solidarity.
