Bhuvan is a sanskrit word for Earth.
It is most similar to Google Earth or Wikimapia and not Google Maps.
It is developed by ISRO and it is a freeware Geographical information system- providing 2D and 3D visualisation services and Earth observation data to users in public domain. It was started in 2009 with simple display of satellite data and basic GIS functionality with many thematic maps on display.. It services users for their remote sensing application needs. It has grown horizontally in diverse areas of applications and vertically in terms of number of image and map services, for ex: – ENVIS program of Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change is actively using Bhuvan services., it is also providing active support for flagship programmes of the government including Integrated Watershed Development Program (Srishti-Drishti), National Mission for Clean Ganga, AMRUT etc. Today, Bhuvan is exclusively used by Punjab, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and North Eastern states.
It provides 1m resolution satellite data for more than 350 cities. It freely accessible on the Internet and used by wide varieties of user community including school children. You must go to its website and look around your city.
It also provides technical help in disaster management during catastrophic events like Cyclone, Floods, Landslides, Earthquakes, Forest Fire and Drought. Uttarakhand disaster in 2013, J&K floods and Hudhud Cyclone in 2014 and Nepal Earthquake in 2015 are some of the examples where Bhuvan provided unique services in terms of online disaster information update, forecasts and post-disaster scenario.
As it provides 2D and 3D representation of the surface of the earth. Therefore it closely resembles Google Earth.
